Primary Memory : This is the main memory of the computer that
stores all the active softwares, tasks, programs, data, information etc. during
the use of the computer. Primary Memory is further categoriesed as Read Only
Memory (ROM) and Random Access Memory (RAM).
ROM : Read Only Memory (ROM) has pre-stored softwares, the
microprograms, to be used by computer during processing of information. The
microprograms stored in this memory replace certain hardware needs. General
purpose of this memory to hold all the time needed microprograms that also
reduce certain hardware needs. This memory generally is non changeable.
Computer can only read from this memory. However, other versions of ROMs also
exist that can be reprogrammed namely PROM (Programmable Read Only Memory),
EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory), EEPROM (Electrically Erasable
Programmable Read Only Memory). General purpose computer does not come equipped
with any writer to this memory. Quite Advanced Technical Computer knowledge is
needed to reprogramme this memory.
